CFE-FEH-A. Franklin MALTBY, b. Jan. 3, 1845 (Jesse 6, Jesse 5, Jonathan 4, Jos.3, Dan.2, Wm.1). m. May 24, 1868, Margaret TRENARY. He served as a private in the Union Army, Civil War, 152nd Infantry. As a small boy he often sat on Abraham Lincoln's knee. His wife d. at Normal Jan. 15, 1925.

Veteran, Dies.
Served with Company Struck by Lightning During Civil War.
Franklin Maltby, 89, Civil war veteran, who knew Abraham Lincoln when the emancipator operated a general store in Salem, died at 8:30 a.m. Saturday, at the home of his daughter, Mrs. B.E.Whitman, 108 West Ash Street, Normal. Complications of old age brought death.
Mr. Maltby had been in ill health a month, and bedfast the last two and a half weeks. Previously he had been active and attended the state fair just prior to his illness. It is believed he taxed his strength there.
Menard Co. Native.
The veteran was born near Petersburg in Menard Co., on Jan. 3, 1844. He married Miss Margaret Trenery there in 1868. He served in the Union army as a private in Company A, 152nd infantry, which company was once struck by lightning while drilling. Several were killed by the bolt and Mr. Maltby was slightly injured. He was a member of the William T. Sherman post of the G.A.R., Bloomington.
As a small boy he often sat on Lincoln's knee, and as he grew older, he knew the former president well, he frequently related.
Shortly after his marriage, Mr. Maltby removed to Warren County and engaged in farming until 30 years ago when he retired. He re- moved to Normal in 1923, where he had lived since. His wife died here in 1926.
Surviving are Mrs. Whitman, a son Lawrence of Abingdon, and three grandchildren, Frank, 207 North Lincoln Street, Mrs. Maude Rose at the Ash street address; and Mrs. George Platt of Washburn. There are al- so half brothers and sisters, as follows: Mrs. Addie Kennedy, Peters- burg; Mrs. Laura Bookout, Peoria; Mrs. Minnie Neal, New City; Mrs. Bird Carpenter of Barry and Lee and Hardie Maltby of Barry.....Burial will be at Berwick. G.A.R. rites will be enacted.
